Free Stylin' with Fred

Recently, I have learned of the deaths of two friends of mine; Phil Senger and Fred Sivyer.  These men both spoke to my heart in their unique ways.  It is as if God used both of them to show me the value of leaving our legacy with others.  Phil, through his kindness and concern for others, brought many friends willing to testify how he greatly blessed their lives.  He did it by his actions (often gifts he shared) and caring words spoken at just the right time.  I knew Phil and his family many years ago while serving as their pastor in Excelsior Springs, MO.  Fred Sivyer was one of the first men I met at Knox.  Why?  Because it was very important to meet all the Freds who seemed to be attracted to the Knox family.  Fred, as many know, was a charter member at Knox.  He brought lots of love and dedication to the early years of our existence.  So, I know firsthand that these two men left some very positive legacies behind.

Recently in our SS class, I remarked that all disciples of Jesus are leaving their legacies.  Sometimes, our witness for Christ is not really very good.  But if daily we decide and purpose in our hearts to be available for Kingdom building, then I know according to scripture that God truly will use us!  So let’s join together in making Jesus our Messiah known to our spheres of influence.

Sullivans’ Kansas City cru Ministry Update

It was a late Friday afternoon near the end of September. The weather was warm but not too hot and seemed to be cooling off just enough to make it feel like fall. As I sat at the registration table for our annual retreat, I wondered how many students would come. I didn’t need to wonder long, because soon enough students began to stream in. That day over 100 students from Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas checked in for the weekend!

Each year we host a weekend retreat for students called Fall Getaway. It is designed to be a time of refreshment, rest and renewal from the fast-paced rhythms of school. Students get to hear compelling messages from God’s Word, spend time personally in the Scriptures, connect with other students and enjoy some fresh air including games, outdoor sports and even a bonfire complete with S’mores!

Hayden is a student from Johnson County Community College who decided to come at the last minute. Excited he wanted to come; I wondered what his experience would be since he didn’t really know anyone. After the retreat he texted me to say this, “Hey I just wanted to say thanks for inviting me and giving me this opportunity of coming here.” Thank you for helping Hayden connect with the Lord and other believers! Your prayers and gifts are the fuel that helps make all we do possible!

Love, The Sullivans

Prayer Requests

Pray that Hayden would continue to connect with other believers and grow in His walk with the Lord!
Pray for our upcoming evangelism initiative based on John 10:10

Most of you know my life has gone through some huge changes recently!  I am now serving our church as a temporary interim pastor since Tim’s retirement.  When the Session approached me several months ago, I prayerfully decided to step up and help Knox in any way I could.  My report back to you is this:  our church members have been awesome in helping my new role and looking ahead to changes we may want to make.  I love how the Holy Spirit challenges us to not get complacent nor stale.  Churches around the world are facing new ways to do outreach, yet still recognizing that you can’t beat personal involvement and invitations.  Thanks so much to all of you who have touched my heart with your great kindness to Cindy and me.

Those attending church live or online know that last Sunday we started a five week series on ways to build joyful homes and marriages.  Why did I select such a topic in the first place?
God placed that desire on my heart through the brokenness I have been seeing in the lives of others I know.  So many broken homes have challenged what the Bible tells us marriages should be.  My focus over the next four weeks is meant to help each of us see we have roles which can impact people God has placed within our sphere of influence.  When the body of Christ works together, we can bring amazing healing and reconciliation to those whom we deeply care about.  Meditate on Proverbs 3:5 & 6 as we hear the upcoming sermons and discuss our family lives in small groups after our worship services.

Change will come to us; whether we are prepared for it or shocked when it comes our way.  Some of the changes we deal with surprise us and take time for some adjustments.  Knox is going through a huge change in October.  Pastor Tim is retiring after 28 years of ministry service at Knox.  Some in our congregation have recounted with me how they first met Tim when he came as lead pastor.  Several members shared with me how his words and spiritual input helped to change the very course of their lives.  Now the time has come for us to serve the pastor who served us spiritually for many years. So please pray fervently now for Tim and his family as they go through a major transition.  Pray that the Holy Spirit will guide them into other ways to serve our Lord and Savior.  He needs some rest and to listen for God revealing His perfect will.

Knox has been through multiple changes since the pandemic first began.  Pray that all of us, young and old, may continue to grow into faithful disciples.  Trust in the Word of God and the Mission of our church to lead us into a bright future.  Our youth have been studying how wisdom and knowledge are different.  May the wisdom of God inculcate the deepest levels of the Bible studies, small groups, and Sunday classes we offer.  Let the ‘light of lives so shine, that others may see our good works, and glorify our Father in heaven’.

Thank You Notes

Called to Greatness

Feeling God’s covering is dynamic. It’s saying “ahh,” when cooling down in some nearby shade from all day being in the heat. And it is as profound as the confidence of knowing the territory God is giving you at your work to serve. That’s the best way to describe how this month has gone here at KU. God is covering more and more of this campus! I’ll be partnering with Alec, our campus director to bring the Gospel of the Kingdom to all twelve scholarship halls. This will be no easy feat. A few of you know the Scholarship halls are near and dear to my heart. It was there the Gospel impacted me in a radical way. We desire to bring it there to the fullest!
Between the two Move-in Days, Unionfest, the Back to School Bash, the Back-to-School Cookout, Men’s Pool night, two campus meetings, and the countless interactions we’ve had with student’s in between; we’ve had thirty-one people signing up for our Bible Study called Kingdom Living (KL’s)! That’s thirty-one new potential future leaders and we aren’t even tired!
Knox Prayer Warrior(s):
We are grateful for your prayers. In fact, we will need more of them as we bunker down with the student’s day-in and out from here on out. Pray for KL groups to form next week, and transformation to follow!
For His Kingdom,
S. J. Rosenak

P. S. Lots of opportunity!

Hello All ~
Thanks so much for all of the amazing underwear you collected…1,458 pieces to be precise. Some even had matching socks! Special thanks to the “One Small Step” team that counted, sorted, and packed the items by size to two in a labeled bag. AMAZING!
We had some sad news this month. One of the homeless encampments was intentionally set on fire in KCK. That means these families with so little lost almost all. Thankfully no one was killed in the incident which is currently being investigated.
The food distribution is continuing, but has been difficult. The number of boxes needed continue to increase, but Harvesters where we can purchase items cheaper than the store have been low on stock. So, we have been filling out the boxes by purchasing at regular stores. Special thanks to those who provided extra funds this month to cover these expenses. Thanks to everyone who continues to support these food supplies as well.
In October we will be collecting socks!
Thanks again for all your help!

Navigators

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your faithfulness to The Navigators. For generations, faithful donors like you have helped our staff build Life-to-Life relationships with countless people across the world.
Parker and Micah are two of these people. While involved with the Navigators at the University of Wyoming, Parker experienced the impact of having someone to read the Bible with and walk alongside him in daily life. He later served as associate staff at Iowa State University so he could invest in others in the same way. When he connected with Micah, an undergrad student, a lifelong friendship formed that continues to this day.
Parker and Micah both grew spiritually in their college years thanks to the commitment of Navigator staff as well as donors like you who give so we can continue this important work. Both men continue to serve the Lord in their professions and other cultural contexts thanks to the day-to-day lessons they learned growing in faith together. Someone invested in Parker. Parker invested in Micah. Parker and Micah continue to invest in others. This is the generational ministry Navigators pray to continue every day.
Your generosity is making this all possible and we are so grateful for your partnership. Thank you for your continued faithfulness so we can make disciples of all nations, one life at a time.

Gratefully,

Andrew Ginsburg

Sullivans’ Kansas City cru Ministry Update
Every year millions of new students begin their college journey! As freshmen arrive, they bring with them not only things from home, but also hopes and fears, expectations and questions! Some are excited and some are nervous. Some are looking forward to a fresh start and some want to keep things just the same as high school. Some wonder what college will be like and some feel they already know what to expect.
No matter what students are thinking or feeling as they begin the new school year, we want to get connected to them! We want to listen well, share with them the Good News of Jesus, and help them follow Him however He is leading them.
This year, we will be helping at University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and Johnson County Community College (JCCC). UMKC had their “UnionFest” last week and we received over 100 answers to a quick questionnaire with more than 80 people wanting to hear more about cru some way! We have served at UMKC for several years and are looking forward to seeing how God will work this year!
We are also excited to help relaunch the cru movement at JCCC this fall! The campus’ involvement fair will be this week, and we can’t wait to see who the Lord will bring! We have a great student leader and are grateful we get to be a part of “reaching the campus today and reaching the world tomorrow” as Bill Bright, the founder of cru, so succinctly put it! Our desire is that the students who get involved will know and experience God’s love for them. We want to shine the light of Jesus to every student on campus! Thank you so much for everything you do! Your prayers and generous giving help make all of this possible. We are praising the Lord for you!

Prayer Requests
Please pray that God would open doors for us to get connected with students who want to grow and live for Him!
Please pray that returning students would be active in helping lead and that our meetings would be filled with His joy!
How can we be praying for you?
Love,
The Sullivans

Freestylin With Fred

Just the past Sunday, I met with both our Adult Spiritual Growth and Youth Planning teams.  In both meetings, I reminded them of the constant need for communicating with youth and adults in various methods.  Thanks to Amy Oleson, we are attempting to stay connected with church members and those we are seeking to bring the gospel message to through our daily witness.  Outreach is one of the Core values at Knox church.  We want to take the mandate of grace into a world that does not truly grasp how great our heavenly Father’s love is for them.  We are the hands and feet of Christ to carry His good news to a broken world.  What motivates us to share the message of Christ?  It is being in God’s word on a daily basis, praying to Him throughout the day, worshiping His holy name, and being in strong fellowship with one another.

So I am encouraging each of us to:  1.  Set aside a devotional time with God.  He delights when we make this spiritual discipline a priority.  It needs to happen even though other voices cry out to distract us.  2.  Pray whenever the Holy Spirit leads us to connect with our Lord.  I begin every day asking God to keep me listening to His responses as I pray to Him.  Waiting is something we talked about last Sunday in our SS class.  Read and meditate on Isaiah 40:31.  3.  Worship should be something we practice every day.  Give praise and thanksgiving to His holy and majestic name.  Do it as you are driving to work or school, while taking lunch breaks, or as you take an evening walk with a favorite spouse or even 4 legged friend.  4.  We show on the worship screen each Sunday how to get engaged with a bible study or even a small group.  Why?  It brings needed fellowship with other believers into our lives.  Start your own small group if that is what God wants you to do.  Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart!
