Knox Library - New Memorial Books

New Memorial Books

The Complete Guide to MONEY by Dave Ramsey of Financial Peace University has been added to the church library by the Deacons in memory of Tom Malowney.  Don't miss your chance to check out this very interesting book.  It will be on display on the rack next to the Welcome Center for the next month.

The Deacons have also added the following children's books to the CDC:

· The Rhyme Bible Storybook in memory of Jim Gillett

· The Sunflower Parable in memory of Mary Knight

· The Parable of the Lily in memory of Nancy Thurston

· Be a King, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Dream and You in memory of Shirley Abrahamson.

These books have been given with love and hope that the Child Development Center children will enjoy them.

Freestylin with Fred

Today I was out early in the morning watering my yard.  As I went to the west side of the house, I found a box turtle who seemed in a hurry (no pun intended).  Next I went inside to let my daughter’s dog into the back yard.  Maizy soon discovered the turtle had invaded her territory.  She followed the turtle, while occasionally barking at the poor thing.  I continued to water the plants.  When done, I couldn’t find the turtle.  Then I looked down into our basement window well.  What do you think I discovered?  Two of them and one was a snapping turtle!

So what was Fred to do with this dilemma?  They could not easily get out of the egress window well, so I decided to take them to our neighborhood creek.  I took the box turtle out first and placed him into my car.  I returned to get the snapping turtle.  But it hissed at me and showed me his powerful jaws.  I was determined to not show any fear, so I swiftly picked the turtle up and placed him in the car next to his buddy.  Then I took them to the creek and deposited them in their more natural habitat.

Moral of the story – Sometimes life has the potential to ‘snap at us’.  We can choose to back away from any solution that might cause us to be fearful, or just cast our fears and burdens at the feet of Jesus.  We can allow Him to guide us into making the correct choice and placing trust in the One who guides our footsteps each day.

Paul Grant had us read Matthew 6:25-34 in our staff meeting.  It is an excellent reminder of how we can deal with the worries of life.  Please take time to read this excellent passage and meditate on the words of Jesus!

Pearls by Paul

Dear Friends:

What is the goal of Christian Education? Our studies and practices will help us to become wise.  To have wisdom is to live in such a way that we are a blessing to the Creator and to the creation of which we are part.
Jesus teaches His followers through story, sharing how a person lacking wisdom tries to build a life on shifting sands, only to find no shelter from difficulties.  In contrast, those who are wise build their lives on solid rock, and when difficulty comes, there is safety. The solid rock, Jesus tells us, is His Word. When we hear the teaching of Jesus and practice that teaching, then we are living wisely (Matthew 7.24) .  This parable is at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, the most well-known collection of Jesus' teachings, recorded in Matthew chapters 5 - 7.  The story of the wise and foolish builders is a fitting conclusion to the sermon, inviting us to hear the words and practice them.
My hope is that our Christian Education offerings at Knox church will form us into wise people.  We will experience wind, rain, and flooding, to be sure.  But we will always have a refuge if we choose wisely, building our lives on the firm foundation Jesus offers us.
Joyfully,
Paul

Thank you to everyone who donated toys, gifts, and money to the Cross-lines Toy Store during Christmas in July.  If you haven’t had a chance to participate, it is not too late.  Any contribution is appreciated.  May God bless you for your kindness and generosity to others through this ministry.

Ministry to the homeless kids of KC, KS!

A huge thank you to everyone that brought pasta and personal care items!  We received 127 boxes/bags of pasta.  It was a huge help for the kids to have food to eat for dinner!  The personal care items are going into the Back-to-School Bags.  The granola bars and cheese & crackers collected in July will be used for snacks so the kids will have some food to eat the week before school starts.

Christmas in July

It is a Knox tradition to celebrate Christmas in July by bringing gifts and toys to church for the Cross-Lines Christmas Toy Store that is held in December.  Each year Knox provides families with the opportunity to select one toy/gift for each child age 0-17, a stuffed toy per child 0-12, several books per child, several stocking stuffers for children, and one board game per family.  They provide these gifts to approximately 1200 children per year.

A Christmas tree will be up in the main hallway beginning July 4.  Take an ornament or several  and shop for the gift written on the ornament.  Then bring the gifts/toys to church and place them in the Cross-Lines box near the Welcome Center.

Sunday, July 18, a special offering will be taken that will  help purchase toys and gifts for the Christmas Store.  Note in the memo section of your check that it is for the Toy Store.  Monetary donations are always welcome for those who are unable to shop.

 Pittsburgh Theological Seminary

Dear Rev. Waggoner and Knox family:
Thank you very much for your recent gift of $500 to Pittsburgh Seminary.  Your financial partnership helps us to provide essential financial assistance for our growing student body, and enables us to deliver a high-quality theological education with relevant and practical preparation for ministries familiar and yet to unfold.
Seeking to participate in God’s ongoing mission in the world, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary is a community of Christ followers, joining in the Spirit’s work of forming and equipping people.  We aspire to help communities gain the tools necessary to make the world a better place.  Your gift enables our students, faculty and staff to continue to prepare for ministry in the way of Jesus.
Thank you again for your support in this important calling.  Your donation helps greatly as we pursue our mission to be a generous and hospitable community of faith and learning.  We are grateful that you have chosen to join us in this call!
Every blessing,
Dominick Oliver

 Cru  The Sullivans

Dear friends at Knox Presbyterian Church,
The biggest news since our last ministry update is we have added a new addition to our family!  Deborah Joy Sullivan was born Friday, March 12.  She is a welcomed gift and a joy to have as part of our family!  We are so glad to have her, and she brings us much joy!  Please be praying Deborah continues to grow healthy and strong and that God would give us the extra measure of grace needed to care well for a family of 6!  (Deborah has three brothers.)
As far as ministry updates go, we wanted to share about a student leader Dylan has been mentoring named Jackson Daniel.  This year, Dylan has been meeting with Jackson and another student about every other week to pray for each other, discuss ways they can grow in their relationship with God and encourage each other in following Christ.  He is graduating this semester and Dylan asked him how Cru has impacted him.
This is what he had to say: “God used Cru to bring me closer to Him, closer to other believers, and closer to living a Spirit-filled life.  I feel better equipped to share my faith and help others to do the same.”
Thank you for your faithful partnership with us and helping make Jackson’s story possible!  Would you pray for him as he graduates and launches into the work force?
Sincerely,
The Sullivans

 Aberdeen Village

Your gift serves as a symbol of Christ’s love for all.  You are truly a blessing.
On behalf of the residents, we thank your church and its members for your generous gift to the Aberdeen Village Good Samaritan Fund.  Your kind support serves to bring peace and comfort to all of the residents at Aberdeen Village.  For that, we are grateful.  Across the PMMA communities, residents and staff come together as family to celebrate the gift of selfless love.
Once again, thank you for your desire to support the Good Samaritan Fund and the meaningful role you have in our mission.
Sincerely yours,
John Westmacott

 Interfaith Hospitality Network, Inc

Greetings:
Please accept our deepest thanks for your most recent donation in the amount of $2,500 and the amount of $846 for guest lodging, for your host week beginning April 11.
With your faithful financial contributions, as well as the many years you have hosted our guest families overnight, you’ve demonstrated your commitment to our work here at IHN of providing shelter and empowering homeless families and single females in our community.  There is no way to fully express our gratitude for your loyalty.  We at IHN are continually inspired by the dedication and generosity of donors like you who answer the call to give again and again.
Simply put, if it wasn’t for faithful supporters like you, we wouldn’t exist.  So thank you for providing the funds and the overnight facilities that we need to make a difference in the lives of the homeless right here in our own community.
We are deeply grateful for your support and hope that you will continue to partner with us in our mission to improve the lives of the homeless.  Thank you for your donation.
Sincerely,
Vicki L. Dercher

Hello All,
Thanks so much for your continued support of these kids and their families!  As a group working together, we are now distributing 120 boxes of food each week.  I’d hoped the need would go down by now, but it continues to be higher.
Plans for the Summer Program which has been held for more than ten years has seen some significant changes this year because of COVID.  We have a KCK school teacher leading the program, since she is familiar with COVID protocols and has worked with the summer program for several years.  This year the program will only be Monday-Thursday, because we need to have Friday available to pack the food boxes for the Saturday distribution.
The kids will still get two meals a day and a snack.  The program will still have the usual components: physical activity, nutrition education, an arts.  The team was fortunate enough to get a grant to cover most of the kids’ meals, so we’re going to focus on meals for the instructors and snacks for the kids.  (This year we won’t send home something for dinner, because they can get the weekly food boxes.)
A huge thank you for the continued help with these kids!
Lori

Pearls by Paul

This time of year, I like to be outdoors.  Many people have shared with me over my years in ministry about how they enjoy the "church of the outdoors".  Sometimes that is an excuse to go hunting or fishing instead of attending church. I disagree with that practice, but I fully understand the notion of experiencing God through nature.  The apostle wrote to the church in Rome, "since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - His eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made..." (Romans 1:20). So, let's get outside and enjoy the creation and glorify the Creator!
I want to thank all the wonderful volunteers who made our VBS happen in June.  It felt so good to finally do some in person ministry.  What a great time we had sharing God's love with children!  I look forward to much more ministry!

Yours joyfully,
Paul

Freestylin with Fred

The 4th of July weekend will once again be a special time for the Daniels family.  Since our children were little, we have traveled to Wichita to see our good friends Dave and Judy Hawkins.  These are the God parents of Noah and Chloe.  I was Dave’s youth pastor back in 1975, officiated their wedding, and greatly enjoy the bluegrass music he has shared with our family for many years.  July is a month where we pause to think about freedom.  Many of us at Knox church have relatives that served to fight for the rights of American freedom and other nations who were oppressed.
My thoughts today come to you from Galatians 5.  Paul reminds us that Christ set us free from the penalty of sin and death.  As Christians, we are not to become slaves to ‘lawful’ living.  God has set us free to live through the power of the Holy Spirit.  We are to live by a faith working through love.  When was the last time you told a Knox friend that you loved them?  I think Christ wants for us to say things like this and mean them!  During July, seek to practice Galatians 5:13 by serving one another.  Let’s walk in God’s Spirit each day, not living in the power of the flesh.  Satan delights when Christians attempt to live in the power of our own strength.  Galatians 5:16 reminds us: “Walk by the Spirit and we will not carry out the desires of the flesh.”
Galatians 5:22,23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.  Is this the character that describes us in the relationships we have with our neighbors?  Let us walk by the Spirit each day we claim to be fully devoted followers of Jesus.

Fred

Freestylin with Fred

I do not always take the opportunity to share personal information about my family.
My 21 year old daughter has always wanted to be an elementary school teacher.  The desire started when she was a preschooler at Maranatha Academy.  She loved her experience of going to school and being addressed by her teacher.  What did she learn from this time in class?
Even as a four year old, I remember her coming home and setting her dolls in a semi-circle in her bedroom.  Then Chloe would proceed to conduct class for dolls and even a few stuffed animals.  Her favorite elementary teacher was Mrs. Steinbrink; who still happens to be our neighbor across the street.  Linda has a wonderful caring spirit for her students, which included attending several of Chloe’s soccer games.
But now that has all changed.  Chloe decided a month ago she does not want to become a teacher.  As parents, how can we help her through this important time of discernment?  Cindy and I have chosen intercessory prayer to become our number one option.  Lots of us who are parents and grandparents have tried to help our kids go through a tough time of choosing a career.  My advice as a parent and leader is to pray they seek God’s will as their first choice.  Our children, hopefully, belong to God’s family and want to honor Him through their dedication in serving others.  Pray faithfully together with them that they can sense the guidance and leading of the Holy Spirit!
Try praying scripture with them like Matthew 6:10, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  Make certain you emphasize putting the will of God above their own motives.  Let me hear from some of you how God has worked through intercessory prayer.

Fred

Pearls by Paul

Dear friends,

I am excited to be a part of our VBS this month.  I started at Knox in March of 2020, the very week that lockdown began. The only good thing about that was the lack of traffic!  I have not been able to do in person ministry as much as I had hoped when I accepted my position in Christian Education.  But now we are beginning to move into a new freedom, and this VBS will hopefully be the beginning of many more ministry events in which we are together, not communicating via the internet.
If you are not playing a role in VBS, I invite you to do so by praying for the students, staff, and volunteers.
VBS is June 7 and 8, 9 to 11am, and is for Knox kids, one friend, grandchildren of Knox members, and children attending the Knox Child Development Center.  My prayer is this will be the beginning of getting back to church the way we like it - in person with the Spirit moving among us.

 Yours joyfully,

Paul
