Freestylin' with Fred

The youth ministry at Knox is full of opportunities- to make great friendships, to try some new experiences, to eat some tasty food, to laugh with friends, to serve the needs of others in our community, to learn from the Word of God, and pray to know Jesus Christ in a deeper way each day!  The youth staff is made up of some truly dedicated servants.  Ronnie Flaherty, Andrew Thull, Heather Schrotberger, Barb Moore, Russell Harvey, and Stacy Espinoza are the excellent people that help provide leadership to our young people.  Pray for them on a regular basis as we meet with youth Sunday afternoons and evenings.  Ask the Lord to make us into role models and mentors that inspire them towards godliness.

A special Mission trip is coming up for some of our youth from March 13-18.  They are going to Little Rock, Arkansas to work with Habitat for Humanity.  They will tackle projects we hope builds a spirit of unity.  While on the trip our young people will be doing a Bible study from the book of James.  They will have quiet times in the morning and even take some hikes on the mountain trails together.  Some fun games will give them time to just be themselves in a foreign environment.  Please pray the Holy Spirit draws the group together as they establish memories that can be cherished.  Pray that the evil one does not disturb what God wants to accomplish through their efforts.  Leaders on this trip include Julie Moylan, Debbie Schluben, Ronnie Flaherty, and Ron Wagner.  The youth who will travel together are Serenity Flaherty, Caleb Harvey, Jordan Baker, Callie Schluben, Julie Kate Moylan, Kyle Christensen, and Kira Wagner.  These youth trips often change the hearts of the participants to follow our Lord in a deeper way.

Every year, across the country, millions of college students graduate. Many have their sights set on what this world values most, and they make it their mission to pursue them.
But what if these students were embarking on the mission of God? What if they were “on mission” to make the world more how God intended it to be, helping people everywhere be restored to a relationship with Jesus?

That’s Cru’s mission: to see lifelong laborers for Christ raised up and sent to the world to proclaim the good news of Jesus. Winter Conference is one place where, time and again, we have seen students grasp a greater vision for their lives.

Last December, 616 students gathered in Minneapolis from Kansas to Wisconsin for Winter Conference! Minneapolis was one of four cities that hosted a total of 2,536 students for Winter Conferences this year.

We worshiped King Jesus together. We were challenged by the Word of God, as our speakers called us to a life more in line with the Scriptures. Students were equipped to share the good news of Christ in each of the four cities that hosted a Winter Conference. They were sent out to take steps of faith and initiate spiritual conversations. Through those that were sent out during the conference to communities around them, 41 people who heard the gospel indicated decisions for Jesus!

While each student experienced Jesus in a personal and unique way, here are a few of the things they shared from the week:

“I have a new passion for sharing the gospel and a reignited passion for God’s Word. I feel so encouraged going into the new year and ready to step out onto campus being a light for Christ.” —Anonymous

“Before coming I had felt very distant from God and felt like I was becoming a lukewarm Christian. This renewed my faith!” —Faith, junior

“I literally became a Christian today.” —Nate, senior

“I was greatly challenged at the outreach and was so excited to see my team taking steps of faith together. While I was sharing what Jesus means to me, I realized I was doing what scared me so much, and it was actually very fun to just get to chat with people! It gave me a new perspective on evangelism!” —Bethany, senior

“I am eager to go out and do what God has called me to.” —Ayana, sophomore

We rejoice for the awesome ways God is at work in students’ lives. He is changing hearts and raising up lifelong laborers for the Kingdom of God. Thank you so much for your partnership, your prayers, and your generosity that make that possible!

Dylan and Leslie Sullivan

PRAYER REQUESTS from Dylan and Leslie:

Pray students would be excited to implement what they learned at Winter Conference.

Praise that students are excited to share their faith.

Pray students’ evangelism efforts would be fruitful.

Freestylin with Fred

Sunday at youth group, I challenged the youth to have a more consistent prayer time with God.  We talked about some things they might do to become better equipped to make their prayer life and scripture reading more dynamic.  Some things we discussed:

1.  Find a time of day that works for them

2.  Find a location where they will not be interrupted

3.  Consider keeping a prayer journal which includes a scripture reading for each day

4. Try cultivating a daily habit which includes reading scripture, writing down what you learn about God, how the text speaks to your life and how you can apply it to your daily walk with God.

5. Praise God everyday for who He is and His wonderful attributes. Take some time to thank Him for at least three things in your life. Confess to Him the areas in your life that are not bringing honor to His name. Pray for others and their needs that the Lord lays upon your hearts.

My challenge requires the exercise of personal discipline and a sincere desire to want to know the Lord deeper than ever before. Satan doesn’t want you to attempt the things I am suggesting. He hates it when the disciples of Jesus get serious about knowing the Savior more and more each day. He says, “Don’t live by the power of the Holy Spirit. Don’t allow the Spirit to guide your life and help you experience the abundant life that Jesus talks about in John 10:10”. If the believers at Knox Church get serious about the spiritual disciplines: scripture reading, daily prayer, routine fellowship, dynamic worship, ministry involvement and sharing your faith it will drive the evil one crazy. Get prepared for his constant attacks to distract you with his call to live a life totally focused on yourself.

This message comes from a fellow pilgrim who works on these things every day.

Students at the University of Kansas need the gospel more than ever!  We train disciplemakers by sharing the gospel with them, helping them grow in their faith, and equipping them to do the same with others.
We desire to reach and disciple as many students as we can.  But this can’t happen without the support of people like you.  We are grateful for your faithful partnership.

Hello to all:
Thanks so much for all the food that was provided in December!  It really helped the families through the period where the kids don’t go to school and get the meals provided.  Since we couldn’t throw the regular Christmas party through the school district, we decided to make the food pickup festive.
We provided hot cocoa, candy canes, as well as decorated cake pops and cookies with Christmas music playing.  We also had a few gloves, hats, and scarves that were donated after the distribution at the school in early December.  But the supplies didn’t go to waste as we provided those to anyone that needed them at the food pickup.  Each food box received double peanut butters, bread, cereal and granola bars for the extra time off.  For Christmas dinner we provided a whole rotisserie chicken, canned fruit, canned veggies, bread, and a treat to eat.
Thanks for the amazing year of generosity in 2021!  Happy New Year!  I pray it will be better for all!
Lori

Freestylin with Fred

This week I was talking with a newer member of the Knox church family.  She was asking some questions about Adult Spiritual Growth classes, Bible studies, and small groups.
I started my involvement in small groups when I was a senior in high school.  My leadership skills were developed while I was a student at KU.  Since that time I have been leading classes and small groups.  Therefore I continue to help facilitate groups here at Knox.  Why?  Because Jesus showed us the value of working with a small group of believers.  The book of Acts (after Pentecost) continues the emphasis on building fellowship within the church.  Acts 2:41 reminds us that 3,000 people received the gospel message, were baptized, and were added to the Kingdom of God.  Acts 2:42 says, “They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and prayer.”  Signs and wonders took place through the apostles.  They held all things in common.  This description in the book of Acts should be indicative of what our community and guests discover in the Body of Christ at Knox.
Do you want to become a part of a small group?  Now is the time to listen to your heart and take that step of faith.  Get connected  and come alongside other devoted Christ followers!  Call me for information on the current groups that Knox has to offer.
